Tour Itinerary
Day 1
Late afternoon departure from New York JFK to Budapest, Hungary with a connection.
Day 2
Late morning arrival into Budapest, the vibrant capital of Hungary. The city's origins date back to the first century BC being founded by Celtic tribes who named the city Buda. It was later conquered and influenced by the Romans, the Magyar Tribes, the Ottomans and the Hapsburgs. Transfer to hotel in the city center for check-in and rest. Dinner and overnight.
Day 3
Take in the splendors of Budapest starting with a tour of the city's most famous monuments on the western side of the Danube River (referred to as "Buda" section). Enjoy the unforgettable view of the city from Gellert Hill. See the Buda Castle District including Fisherman's Bastion. Visit the Matthias Church also known as the Coronation Church, one of Budapest's most important and beautiful churches. See the Royal Palace and the Hungarian Parliament Building. Cross the Danube on the St. Elizabeth Bridge to the eastern part of the city. Here, see the Heroes' Square dedicated to the leaders of the seven Magyar tribes who founded the city. See St. Stephen's Basilica, the Dohany Synagogue and the nearby Grand Market. Dinner and overnight.
Day 4
Depart Budapest and travel northwest to the city of Bratislava, capitol of Slovakia, located on the Danube River on the border with Austria and set in the background of the Little Carpathian Mountains. Enjoy a short tour of the city to see the Old Town, Michael's Gate, the Academia Istropolitana, the Slovak National Theatre and Castle on the hill with beautiful city views. Continue to Vienna following along the Danube as we cross into Austria. Dinner and overnight in Vienna.
Day 5
Full day to enjoy the magnificent city of Vienna, which was the Imperial City of the Holy Roman Empire ruled by the Hapsburg Family which governed vast territories known as the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Enjoy a panoramic view while traveling along the Ring Strasse. Then walk through the city center to see the Old Town passing by the most important city monuments to include the Donner Fountain, Belvedere Palace Gardens, the Hofburg Palace, the Albertina Museum, the Spanish Riding School and St. Stephen's Cathedral (burial site of many of the Hapsburg Royal Family). This afternoon visit the famous Schönbrunn Palace, the exquisite baroque summer residence of the Hapsburg Emperors. Enjoy a tour of the palace and gardens. Dinner and overnight in Vienna.
Day 6
Bid farewell to Vienna. Travel westward on a scenic road trip to Salzburg passing through beautiful mountain ranges and by scenic alpine lakes and villages. Along the way, visit one of Austria's most iconic destinations, the Melk Abbey, a designated UNESCO world heritage site. It is considered to be the best monument of Baroque architecture in Austria. Still operating today, the Melk Abbey has been in the care of Benedictine Monks who have been there since the year 1089. Visit the monastery and magnificent gardens and enjoy the view of the Danube and the surrounding hills. Continue west and arrive in Salzburg in the late afternoon. Check-in at our city center hotel. Dinner and overnight.
Day 7
Today enjoy a tour of Salzburg, the city of Mozart and best known for the movie, "Sound of Music". Start with a tour of Salzburg's Old Town, with the Hohensalzburg Fortress in view, walking by the Salzburg Cathedral. Visit the iconic locations from the "Sound of Music". Pass by the Hellburnn Palace. In the afternoon climb the hills surrounding Salzburg to visit the Maria Plain Basilica. Here see the miraculous painting of the "Virgin with Child" and hear the magnificent bells toll. Dinner and overnight.
Day 8
Morning departure from Salzburg. Travel south through the Austrian Alps into the region of Tyrol, with a stop in the city of Innsbruck, site of the 1976 winter Olympics. Time permitting, enjoy a short walking tour of the Old Town. Innsbruck is home to the Court Church also known as the "Scharzmander Church" famous for its 28 life size statues standing guard over the tomb of Emperor St Maximilian. Late afternoon arrival in Trento, Italy with time to visit the Tridentine Diocesan Musuem. It was in Trento where the Council of Trent was held 1545-1563. One of main decree's of the council was to codify the liturgy of the Tridentine Latin Mass, under the authority of Pope Pius V. This museum holds many of the documents relating to the history of the council. Dinner and overnight in Trento.
Day 9
This morning discover more of Trento during a walking tour of the historic center. Located at the base of the Italian Dolomites, Trento (considered an autonomous region) serves as a crossroads between Austria and the rest of Italy. Take time to visit the Cathedral of San Vigilio and enjoy views of the Buonconsiglio Castle with the mountains in the background. Early afternoon departure through the region of Veneto. Arrive in Venice Mestro. Dinner and overnight in Venice Mestra with the views of Venice.
Day 10
Full day in Venice. An excursion to the floating jewel of Venice, a collection of 118 small islands connected by canals and bridges. Travel by motoscafi (water taxi) across the ancient Venetian commercial waterway and embark in Venice in front of the Church of San Simon Piccolo which is served by the FSSP. Enjoy a walking tour of Venice, a once great maritime power of the Middle Ages and Renaissance era and starting point for the Crusades and Christian Navy under the direction of Don Juan of Austria, which defeated the Turks in the great battle of Lepanto. See St. Mark's Square, the Doge's Palace and the golden Basilica of San Marco (where you can venerate the tomb of St. Mark, the great "Lion of God", whose body was brought here from Egypt in 828. Enjoy some free time before returning to the mainland of Venice Mestre. Farewell dinner and overnight.
Day 11
Transfer to nearby Marco Polo Airport for a mid-morning flight to New York. Afternoon arrival into NY JFK Airport.
