According to an 8th century tradition, the bones of the Apostle Saint James, one of the “Sons of Thunder” and a Missionary to Iberia, were miraculously discovered in a “field of stars”. It was on this exact site that the Cathedral was built. Pilgrims continue to come from all corners of the earth to pay homage to the fisherman from Galilee! Climb the steps behind the main altar to pay homage to St. James and then descend into the crypt below to pray in front of the reliquary containing his remains. With anticipation, prepare for the Botafumeiro experience, a centuries old tradition where you can view a 5-foot thurible (hanging 170 feet), swing almost to the roof of the transept, emitting thick clouds of incense.
